Nebraska Extension Seminar Aims to Educate Nebraskans About Horse Racing Expansion Thursday, March 30, 2023

Following the passing of the Racetrack Gaming Act through a 2020 ballot referendum, an expansion of the horse racing industry may be on the horizon in Nebraska. An upcoming series of educational seminars by Nebraska Extension's Equine program is being targeted at those that want to get more involved.

"A Nebraska Horse Racing Awareness Seminar," sponsored by Fonner Park and Nebraska Extension, will be held on April 28, 2023 at Fonner Park in Grand Island, NE.

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Equestrian Western Team at Semifinals
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Equestrian Teams Continue Success, Hunt and Western Teams Enter Postseason Competition Tuesday, March 21, 2023

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Equestrian Hunt and Western teams have both seen continued success in recent competitions. The Hunt team finished in third place overall in its last regular season competition in Colorado Springs on March 11th, and had five riders, including Anna Lampereur, Ainslie Suyko, Maddy Casey, Abigail Hunter and Laurene Tomka compete for regional championships on March 12. Lampereur advanced to the Zones competition and will compete for a chance to qualify for Nationals on April 8th at Stanford University.

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Livestock Judging Team
Livestock Judging Team Finishes Spring Strong at Houston Livestock Show Monday, March 20, 2023

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Livestock Judging Team closed out its spring schedule on March 18 by bringing home hardware from the Houston Livestock Show.

Nebraska finished as Reserve Champion High Point Team Overall, and was 3rd High Team in Sheep/Goats, 3rd High Team in Swine, 4th High Team in Cattle, and 6th High Team in Reasons.

As individuals, Sarah Dilley was Nebraska's top finisher placing as 3rd High Individual Overall, High Individual in Sheep/Goats, 6th High Individual in Reasons, and 7th High Individual in Placings.

Lincoln, Neb. - The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Department of Animal Science will honor five individuals with awards at its annual Block and Bridle Club and Alumni and Friends Reunion at the Nebraska East Union Great Plains Room on April 22. Dr. Ronnie and Jane Green will be recognized as the 2023 Block and Bridle Club honorees, while Dr. Cayla Beebe-Iske, Dr. Deb Hamernik, and Dr. Rebecca Bott-Knutson will be honored for their outstanding accomplishments as undergraduate and graduate alumni.

Equestrian team members with awards following competition
Western Equestrian Team Claims 18th-Straight Regional Championship Monday, February 27, 2023

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Western Equestrian team closed out its regular season on Saturday, February 25 with a competition at Colby Community College (Kan.), before claiming its 18th consecutive Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association (IHSA) region championship on Sunday, February 26th.

Saturday highlights included finishing as high point team, while Sarah Eberspacher earned Reserve High Point Rider honors.

Livestock Judging Team at San Antonio Stock Show
Livestock Judging Team Has Impressive Results at San Antonio Stock Show Monday, February 27, 2023

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Livestock Judging team returned from Texas with some hardware from the San Antonio Stock Show.

The team finished sixth high team overall at the contest. They also earned a fourth high team in cattle and goats, and fifth high team in sheep and reasons.

The team will head back to Texas on March 18 for the Houston Stock Show and Rodeo.

USDA AMS Establishes Cattle and Carcass Grading Correlation Training Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Thursday, February 23, 2023

The USDA Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) announced that the University of Nebraska-Lincoln would be the site of one of three regional Cattle and Carcass Grading Correlation Training Centers on Wednesday.

West Texas A&M University and Colorado State University join Nebraska as the other regional sites.
