Dr. Jessica Petersen
I am an Associate Professor of Animal Functional Genomics. I teach Animal Breeding and Genetics (ASCI 330), a course that expands upon basic concepts in genetics with application to both livestock and companion animals. Topics we cover include the genetic evaluation of individuals including how to calculate and use estimated breeding values, the impact of selection on breeding programs, inbreeding and genetic diversity, and benefits of crossbreeding systems. We also use commercial genotyping tools for some of the students' own dogs as an example of how genetics is being incorporated into everyday life.
