Lavon Sumption, Emeritus Professor of Animal Breeding and Genetics, Passes Away Wednesday, September 28, 2022

Lavon Sumption, an emeritus professor of Animal Breeding and Genetics, passed away on Thursday, September 22, 2022.

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, October 22, 2022, beginning at 3:00 PM at the Holmes Park Golf Course, 3701 South 70th, Lincoln, NE. Memorials are suggested to the Food Bank of Lincoln, or the University of Nebraska Foundation’s Gudmundsen Sandhills Ag Lab Endowment Fund.

Sumption came to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1957 as a researcher in swine fertility and also served as an advisor to the Block and Bridle Club. After leaving the university and spending nine years away from academia, he returned in 1981 to serve as the District Director at the West Central Research, Extension, and Education Center in North Platte, Neb., and served in various roles at Nebraska until his retirement in 1995.

Lavon is survived by his wife, Peggy; brother, John (Lisa); son, John; daughters, Elizabeth (Rodel) Broas, Robin (Wayne) Campbell, Christine (Richard) White and Gloria. Joseph Rayford, Joshua (Joanna) Rayford; grandchildren, Amanda, Kate, Kelli, Morgan, Kaleb, Milo and Olivia; great-granddaughters, Hanna and Olivia.  He was preceded in death by parents, Erwin (Ole) and Elna Niva Sumption.
