Welcome to Nebraska Animal Science Youth Extension!
Several youth programs have been developed and are offered through the Animal Science Department of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. This page contains information to get Nebraska youth involved in the field of Animal Science and to gain valuable experience working with production animals through exiting and educational events.
Companion Animals
The primary goal of the companion animal extension program is to improve the quality of life of companion animals. Companion animals are diverse group of animals that includes dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, companion birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, and many more.
4-H Horse Program
The Nebraska 4-H horse programs offer life-changing opportunities for youth. Along with learning horsemanship and animal husbandry, 4-H members practice life skills, such as responsibility, self-discipline, personal safety, goal setting, and keeping records.
Livestock Judging Camp
This camp is geared toward youth 7-18 years of age who have an interest in competitive livestock judging. The camp covers content on all of the livestock species including cattle, hogs, sheep, and goats. Youth will learn about the priority traits that we use when evaluating livestock and gain basic knowledge of the livestock industry as it pertains to each specie.
Premier Animal Science Event (PASE)
The Nebraska 4-H Premier Animal Science Event (PASE) features a variety of state-level animal science contests. The two-day event is held annually at the Nebraska Animal Science Complex in Lincoln. Youth explore issues related to the animal industry, discover college and career opportunities, and work with other youth from across the state.
4-H Poultry
Chick Days is an annual educational event for small and back-yard poultry producers and youth to learn more about the poultry industry. The event is open to both youth (Ages 7-18) and adults (ages 19 and up).
Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA)
Nebraska 4-H requires all youth enrolled in livestock projects to complete annual quality assurance certification through Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA). YQCA is a national multi-species quality assurance program focused on three core pillars: food safety, animal well-being, and character development.
