Dr. Sheila Purdum joined the Department of Animal Science as an Associate Professor and Extension Poultry Specialist in 1992 and has served as a Professor since 1999. She served as the interim head of the department from August 2007-August 2009. Dr. Purdum also serves on the National Research Council as a member of the National Academy Press Subcommittee on poultry nutrition.

Summary: Introductory animal science laboratory designed to introduce basic principles of animal biology and management.
Research
My research focuses on poultry nutrition, including sustainable feed resources for broilers and laying hens, the effects of feeding programs on egg quality, and the determination of embryonic sex utilizing heart rate and egg temperature indexes.
Extension
My extension programs focus on poultry management, including welfare and sustainable practices for feeding poultry. I also work with youth 4-H and FFA poultry projects.
