Dr. Rick Stowell joined the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2001 as an Assistant Professor and Extension Animal Environment Specialist and has been a full Professor since 2020. He has a split appointment between the Department of Biological Systems Engineering and the Department of Animal Science. Dr. Stowell is also a member of the leadership team for the Livestock & Poultry Environmental Learning Community.

Teaching
AGST 342: Animal Housing Systems
Summary: Production facilities for livestock and poultry will be developed with emphasis on building and feedlot layout, ventilation, heating and cooling systems; energy utilization; and construction materials and methods.
AGST 462: Managing Technology in Equipment Systems
Summary: Team-based activities to evaluate integration of technology into, and utilization of resources for, agricultural systems; perform technical and economic evaluations; make technical and economic recommendations; and develop professional written and oral reports. Topics include technology system performance and management, project scheduling and planning, cost estimation, reliability analysis, and risk assessment.
Extension
My extension focus is on improving environmental conditions in and around livestock and poultry facilities, mitigating thermal stress in livestock and poultry, and facility design for optimal management of animals, labor, manure, and other resources
