Brooke McAnally is a Ph.D., student with a specialization in physiology. Her research focus is in utero heat stress (IUHS) diminishes the reproductive potential of mature boars by decreasing total sperm production and compromising sperm quality. By studying boar lines that have been genetically selected for either greater heat tolerance or sensitivity, we can investigate the molecular and cellular mechanisms triggered by IUHS. This will be accomplished by examining the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, the testicular transcriptome, and the sperm health and function of affected boars. Additionally, these studies will offer valuable insight into whether targeted genetic selection programs can reduce the detrimental effects of IUHS.
