Dr. Amy Schmidt came to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln as an Assistant Professor and Livestock Bioenviromental Engineer in 2012 and has been a full Professor since 2023. She has a split appointment between the Department of Animal Science and the Department of Biological Systems Engineering, and is also a courtesy graduate faculty member in the School of Natural Resources.
Education
Ph.D., Biological Engineering, Mississippi State University, 2010
M.S., Agricultural Engineering, Iowa State University, 1999
B.S., Agricultural Engineering, Iowa State University, 1997
Research
Dr. Schmidt leads an integrated research and extension program focused on environmentally responsible livestock production, primarily focused on manure management and water quality. Her research focus includes evaluating the value of livestock manure to soil properties, crop productivity, and water quality; assessing nutrient and contaminant transport in agricultural systems; and management of livestock manure and mortalities to protect animal and human health.
Extension
Dr. Schmidt focuses on delivering evidence-based information to farmers, agricultural professionals, and communities to increase acceptance of manure as a locally recyclable soil amendment and nutrient source to improve cropland fertility and long-term resilience. Demonstrating the intricate connection between water conservation/water quality to healthy soils forms the basis for her integrated research and extension program. She also leads efforts nationally to train the “next generation” of extension engineers and water quality specialists by engaging students in discovery and the delivery of research-based recommendations and education through extension programming.
