Animal Science Department
Horse Program

The Horse Program at the University of Nebraska -Lincoln is a new and growing aspect of the total curriculum within the Department of Animal Science. The curriculum offers a 4-year Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science. The program is built around the basic disciplines of animal science including nutrition, reproduction, physiology, genetics, behavior and management. Students with a specific interest in the horse area are able to enroll in numerous courses dealing specifically with various aspects of horse production and evaluation. Furthermore, non-animal science students frequently pick up some of these courses on an elective basis.

The excellent facilities of the Animal Science Department provide an excellent setting for the equine courses. There is a beautiful 80' x 215' indoor, heated arena connected to 14 box stalls. Additionally, all horses and equipment are provided. Therefore, anyone wishing to enroll in a course, need only to sign up! The department currently owns 14 horses of which most have been donated to the University of Nebraska. The majority of the horses are American Quarter Horses with a few Arabians and Paints. Occasionally, additional horses are brought in on loan to accommodate course needs.

There are scholarships available for students majoring in Animal Science. Also, internships are available on a limited basis at breeding and training farms within Nebraska and out of state. Students interested in pursuing careers within the horse industry are assisted in identifying potential employers ranging from various types of companies to horse trainers and breeding farms.
