Reproductive Axis

Reproductive Axis diagram
GnRH is released from the hypothalamus and travels through the hypothalamo-hypophyseal to the the anterior pituitary where it binds its receptors on the surface of the gonadotrope cell. This signals the release of LH and FSH which in turn act on the gonads resulting in the release of the steroid hormones. These hormones, along with inhibin have a negative feedback effect acting on both the level of the anterior pituitary as well as the hypothalamus. The binding of GnRH to its cognate receptor thus plays a pivotal role in proper and efficient reproductive function.
